Hand Washing Technique

Hand washing is arguably the simplest and most effective way to prevent the spread of infection. As healthcare professionals we wash our hands many times during the course of a day at work. Are we doing our best?

When possible, use a sink with foot or elbow water controls. If hand-control faucets must be used, turn water on and off with clean paper toweling. Adjust water temperature until it is comfortably warm. Wet hands and apply disinfectant soap. While holding hands down and into the sink, use the friction of one hand on the other to create a lather. Wash hands thoroughly for 15 - 30 seconds, taking care to wash between fingers, around the nails, and extending to the wrist and forearm areas. Rinse by allowing running water to flow over hands, wrists, and forearms while holding them in a downward position. Avoid touching any part of the sink with your freshly washed hands. Dry using clean paper toweling.
