Clarification from CDC on Ophthalmologists & Optometrists as Lab Directors

The CDC has recently written a letter to state agencies directing them to interpret CLIA to include ophthalmologists and optometrists as directors of clinical laboratories performing tests of moderate complexity outside of their medical specialty.

An ophthalmologist qualifies as a lab director if he/she has at least one year of experience directing or supervising such laboratories or by obtaining at least 20 CME credits in laboratory practice. Optometrists must have 20 CME credits in laboratory practice to qualify.

NOTE: Your state regulations on laboratory personnel may be more restrictive. For state agency contact information go to www.astho.org.
